Stay on the Porch

The best statement to describe the Dawgs this year is, “If you can’t run with the big dogs, then stay on the porch.” I haven’t written about the basketball Dawgs (the Salukis) lately because there hasn’t been anything positive to say. In fact, most words I would use to explain the team’s efforts would be unacceptable in polite conversation. The situation is so pathetic that Henri suggested the only way the Men Dawgs might win a game is if they played the Women Dawgs (whose overall record so far this season is 5-24).

Of the ten teams in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Dawgs have sole possession of Second Last place. The Dawgs’ only salvation this weekend is that their opponent is the Purple Aces of the University of Evansville (IN) who are in Last Place. The Dawgs are a pitiful lot. They play as individuals, not as a team. Their greatest skill in recent games has been to get a lead of about nine points in the last quarter and then lose the game in the final minutes. A new local brewery, Big Muddy Brewing in Murphysboro, has just released its second selection of ale, a brew in honor of the region’s most popular mascot – the Saluki dog. The dark amber ale is named Saluki Dunkel Dog. Considering the success of the men’s and women’s Saluki basketball teams this year, a more appropriate name might be Saluki Punkel Dog. Maybe there is hope today, and I won’t lose another $2.00 in my wager with Henri. The SIU Arena will be the setting this afternoon for the battle of the losers. May the lesser loser win! (That oxymoron precisely illustrates my feelings.)
UPDATE: Finally! - Dawgs 80, Purple Aces 64. The Dawgs are on a winning streak, one in a row!
